Following the success of a number of similar projects we’ve carried out for the steel industry both in the UK and overseas in the last fifteen years, we’ve recently completed a new bespoke weighing and batching system for the scrap steel recycle yard at Corus in Rotherham.  The project primarily involved precision weighing in conjunction with PC’s fitted to mobile plant.  Huge, 200Tonne capacity trailers take large, forged steel baskets around the site to collect the scrap steel which is weighed on the trailers against pre-defined recipes. Scrap steel arrives by road and rail and is either tipped into bays or is unloaded directly into the baskets from rail cars.  All weights are displayed in real time on ruggedised, touch-screen PC’s in Cranes and Tractors that allow operators to see what is required of them.  This new system enables Corus to produce very precise and specific grades of steel alloy; it went live in August 2008 and runs 24-7.

The weighing platform is supported on four, precision load cells fitted to the chassis.  Each includes a small microcomputer than converts the analogue voltage from the sensor into digital form.

The load data is thus transmitted to a central computer at the front of the trailer.  This is an embedded PC running an application under Windows CE and the application program is held in Flash memory.
